Recognising Scams

Unfortunately, scammers target online marketplaces. Learn to recognise the warning signs to protect yourself.

Common Scam Types

Too Good to Be True

A rare classic car at a fraction of its value? Be very suspicious. Scammers use unrealistically low prices to attract victims.

Advance Payment Scams

The "seller" asks for payment or a deposit before you've seen the item, often with excuses about why you can't view it first.

Overpayment Scams

A "buyer" sends more than the asking price and asks you to refund the difference. The original payment later bounces.

Fake Escrow Services

Scammers create fake escrow websites that look legitimate but simply steal your money.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Price significantly below market value
  • Seller won't meet in person or allow viewings
  • Pressure to act quickly
  • Requests for unusual payment methods
  • Seller is abroad or item is "in storage"
  • Poor English or generic responses
  • Photos that look professional or stolen
  • Refusal to answer specific questions
  • Story keeps changing

How to Protect Yourself

  • Always view items in person before paying
  • Research typical prices for what you're buying
  • Reverse image search photos to check if they're stolen
  • Use secure payment methods with buyer protection
  • Trust your instincts—if it feels wrong, walk away
Remember: If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Take your time and don't let anyone pressure you.
