Safety & Trust
Meeting Sellers Safely
Meeting strangers to view and purchase items requires caution. Follow these guidelines to stay safe.
Before the Meeting
- Verify the seller through their profile and listing history
- Have a phone conversation first if possible
- Research the item so you know what to look for
- Tell someone where you're going and when
- Share the meeting details with a friend or family member
Choosing a Location
- For initial meetings, suggest a public place
- Well-lit car parks, petrol stations, or cafés work well
- Some police stations offer safe exchange zones
- If visiting a private address, note the location and surroundings
When to Meet
- Always during daylight hours
- Avoid early morning or late evening
- Weekend afternoons are often ideal
- Don't rush—choose a time that works for you
Who to Bring
- Take a friend or family member
- Two people are always safer than one
- They can also offer a second opinion
- If you must go alone, tell someone your plans
During the Meeting
- Trust your instincts—if something feels wrong, leave
- Keep your phone accessible
- Don't carry large amounts of cash to a first viewing
- Take your time inspecting the item
- Ask questions and verify the seller's claims
Payment at Collection
- Agree the payment method beforehand
- For cash, meet at or near a bank
- Bank transfers should clear before collection
- Get a receipt for your records
Important: Your safety is more important than any purchase. If a situation feels unsafe, leave immediately—no project is worth risking your wellbeing.
