Condition: These stone niches are architectural salvage from old Havelis, palaces and the like. Dating back to the mid 19th c., if not earlier, each example is unique with age related marks and wear and tear. This distressed look adds to the appeal. Antique Indian architecturally salvaged red sandstone niche. Particularly tactile, hand-hewn example. 19th c. At 6.9 Kgs, this is a substantial decorator's piece. This exquisite red sandstone niche has been sourced from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, dates back to the mid-19th century and becoming increasingly difficult to find. Reclaimed from an architecturally salvaged project, this niche would once have graced a grand Haveli or palace, and been used to house ghee or oil lamps. We were privileged to visit the privately owned 11th c. Juna Mahal in Dungarpur last year, where we photographed green quartzite niches of this nature in their natural habitat. LAST FOUR IMAGES. Red sandstone, of course, was the building material of choice in Jodhpur, as so exquisitely displayed at Mehrangarh Fort. IMAGES 14, 15 & 16. This hand-hewn example is an authentic, impressive stone niche that has housed oil or ghee lamps for decades, throwing a soft shimmering light on many a balmy Indian night. At 6.9 Kgs, this niche is substantial, and would look good, inside or out. Perhaps in a bathroom alcove with a tea light or candle, spot-lit in a garden setting, even home to a small revered deity, as alluded to here? Height: 34 cms, width: 14.5 cms, depth:11.5 cms.
